Deciding on the Best Farm Fence
When picking the best farm fence, you need to take into consideration the size of the animals on your farm. This will determine the fence height and rail needs of your fence. Then you should consider the type of fence that would be best for maintenance, strength and value for your property. Many farms are switching to vinyl fencing for many reasons, such as:
- From a financial perspective, most vinyl farm fence products will last a lifetime or generations as opposed to the frequent replacement and/or repair of wood fence that could cost tens of thousands in a lifetime, depending on the size of your farm or property.
- Vinyl fence for a farm requires less labor and time to install, which also reduces the cost of your fence maintenance.
- Vinyl fence has proven to be ‘greener’ than wood fencing because they do not require chemical treatments or paint that would seep into the ground and possibly harm ground water, foliage (food) production, and, ultimately, your animals. In addition, trees are not depleted from forests to make them.
There are so many strong and beautiful styles in vinyl fencing today that not only make your property look unique, but also add considerable value.
Here are some tips on choosing the best vinyl farm fence…
For smaller animals, you want to make sure that the bottom rail is close to the ground and that the rails are not too far apart. Consider a 4 or 5 rail vinyl farm fence. This vinyl fence style has smaller openings between each rail and, therefore, is safer to contain smaller animals.
There is also the Big Rail vinyl farm fence option. The rails are ½ an inch wider than the average vinyl fence making each opening a bit smaller and the bottom rail on the Big Rail vinyl fence is closer to the ground than the standard rail vinyl fence. This is a great containment option for smaller animals.
If your animals are larger, then consider a vinyl fence where the highest rail is at least 4 feet above the ground. This prevents large animals such as horses, from jumping the vinyl fence. You will not need to worry as much about the rail spacing and that leaves you with many style options from the 2 rail vinyl fence to the Crossbuck style vinyl fence. The Crossbuck vinyl fence is a great style choice if you want to keep your animals heads from poking through the rail openings.
The Round Rail vinyl fence with 2, 3 or 4 rails is another option, all of which come equipped with an embedded stainless steel electric wire that can be hooked up to an electrified fence charger. The Round Rail vinyl fence has rounded posts and rails and gives a sleek look for your farm. You can choose between 3 colors for this Round Rail vinyl fence: white, Kentucky black or weathered wood.
There is also the standard rail vinyl fence. This vinyl fence comes with 2, 3 or 4 rails. For the color, you can choose between white or tan.
Since every animal’s size and personality is different, always check exact specifications before ordering to make sure that the farm fence style you are choosing is the best match for your farm AND your animals!
